Notes from the AHS Spring Athletic Meeting (2/25)
26 Feb 2019 by Jeff Searle
• Spring sports coaches, AD Pat McCabe and Principal Natalie Pramenko were introduced
• Athletic Trainer, Katie Wallace was introduced
o Pat went over Katie’s role as providing both injury prevention assistance and post-injury therapy
o Pat mentioned that with any non-concussion injury, Katie can clear athletes to return to play
o Specifically with concussions, or possible concussion situations, Colorado State law requires a practicing physician to clear the player for the return to play protocol. AHS further requires that Katie Wallace clear the player to enter the protocol as well.
• Athletic Fees
o $135 per sport/per athlete
o $270 max per athlete/per year (i.e. fee is waived for 3rd sport)
o $405 max per family/per year
o Note: These do not include Booster Club fees
• Academic Eligibility
o Reports are generated by the AHS administration weekly and come out on Wednesdays
o Weekly reports are distributed to the head coaches
o The academic eligibility week runs Monday – Saturday
o Any student athletes with more than one failing grade are deemed ineligible for the following week (starting the following Monday)
o Student athletes have until 3pm the Friday after the report is issued to rectify any eligibility questions. The must take the proof to Pat/Janelle, get a form signed and then the athlete must get the signed form to the head coach.
• Lettering Requirements
o These vary greatly with the type of sports and are strictly the decision of the head coach.
o Coaches must communicate the lettering requirements to the players
• AHS (LPS) Event Ticket prices
o $4 student
o $6 adult
• Athletic Code of Conduct (Highlights)
o Full code of conduct is available on the AHS web site
o The code is enforced 24/7/365
o Primarily revolve around drug and alcohol use
o “Constructive Possession” – When a student is in the presence of others using drugs or alcohol and does not make a reasonable effort to extract themselves from the situation.
o Code of Conduct and “Constructive Possession” standards are higher and more strictly enforced for student athletes.
• School Start Time Changes
o Morning practices – Only sports that were running morning practices prior to this year are being allowed to continue having morning practices.
o Early release – This is much more common with the later school start time
o Bussing – Buses are limited (7 for the entire district) and thus in high demand. Need to get bus requests in as early as possible
• Arbiter Athlete Registration
o Each athlete must do this one time
o Text S40976 to 69274
o Parents do not need to register unless there is a student transfer situation
• Communication – Emphasis from the AHS Athletic Department
o Effective communication within programs
o Listening for Understanding
o “Collective Efficacy” – I.e. Optimistic Confidence
• Issues or Concerns
o Player
o Coach
o Athletic Director
o Principal
o Pat noted that this is the order in which issues should be communicated and mentioned that if parents or students go directly to him or Natalie, they will bring the coach in to discuss. The primary reason for this is that in almost all cases, Pat or Natalie are hearing the details second hand and need to get both sides of the story.
o Pat asked that parents “assume positive intent,” in other words, it is unlikely that a coach is out to get a player.
o Pat discussed the conflicting priorities between coaches and parents, where the directive from the athletic department to coaches is that they make the team the priority, Pat acknowledged that the parent’s priority (and rightly so) is the individual. He asked that parents keep this perspective in mind when raising a concern.
o Safety – Pat made it clear that any issues or concerns that are safety related need to come directly to him immediately
